Demystifying STEM

An introduction to the WHAT and WHY behind STEM.

Course Overview

Demystifying STEM was the first Knowledge Bloc in this series. If you completed that Bloc, you now have a strong foundation in what STEM. This next Bloc builds on that foundation by shifting from understanding to action, taking a deeper dive into how educators can use the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to address real world problems in their local community.

This knowledge bloc recaps the importance of STEM that integrates real world problem solving via project based learning approach. It then takes educators through a deeper dive of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), detailing the what and why of this framework.

Participants will examine the SDGs further in their own local context as well as examine successful examples of SDG projects, before creating their own template for units that incorporate what they have learned.

The pod is primarily designed for educators with a good understanding of STEM who are ready to begin boosting the success of their STEM programs with a project based learning approach.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Recall the basic elements of STEM and their relationship to project-based learning.
  2. Identify practical ways to integrate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into STEM projects through real-world examples.
  3. Evaluate examples of the SDGs being used to support local projects, identifying best practices for effective implementation.
  4. Examine your local community and context through the lens of the seventeen SDGs to identify opportunities for supporting a STEM project.
  5. Design an introductory project-based learning roadmap that connects your STEM goals to an SDG-driven project with the potential to benefit your local community.

Secondary Learning Objectives

  1. Expand your knowledge of STEM pedagogy to better support and collaborate with your peers.
  2. Evaluate the effectiveness of STEM in achieving your school or organization’s key goals, including its impact on and connections to your local community.

Knowledge Blocs (KB) are designed for adult learners to obtain professional development, with learning objectives based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, and actionable outcomes supported by Bloom’s Taxonomy. Knowledge Blocs in general, and where possible, follow the Torrence Incubation Model of Teaching and Learning.

An account is required to access Knowledge Blocs. Once a Knowledge Bloc has been purchased, access is granted immediately.

Knowledge Blocs contain 5 Bytes, each with a video, contributing information, activity, quiz, and additional community features. Some Knowledge Blocs may include a supplemental Workbook, available through Google Suite at no charge for the end user. A Google Account is required to access this feature.

There is no time limit for Knowledge Blocs. Video Bytes may require viewing where indicated. Quiz Bytes may require a minimum score of 80% – 90% where indicated. All quizzes must receive a passing grade to obtain credit for the entire Bloc.

All Blocs within the 5 Bytes must be completed to be eligible for a Knowledge Bloc to be marked as completed.

Payment required for initial access to Knowledge Blocs. All payments handled through Stripe. Please contact the Knowledge Bloc Team for specific inquiries regarding payment and refund.

Knowledge Blocs are optimized for current versions of major web browsers. We recommend using a desktop or mobile device running an up-to-date operating system to access all features.
