Shaping the future with culturally responsive classrooms for Gifted and Talented students.

Course Overview

This Knowledge Bloc offers early career educators and those with limited experience in gifted education a comprehensive exploration of culturally responsive gifted education. Participants will examine how the evolution of American culture and the educational system has shaped the experiences of gifted students of color while learning from influential researchers and practitioners who have championed their identification and support.

This Knowledge Bloc is designed as a follow-up to Creativity 101 for Gifted Education.

Key Learning Objectives

Byte 1

Recognize how the history of culture has influenced the educational system.

  1. Explain the history of culture in America.
  2. Describe how culture has been assimilated within the American education system.
  3. Explore the implications of integrating schools with the 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education (Topeka, KS) Supreme Court case.
  4. Address how current schooling models and practices are similar and different from past educational practices.

Byte 2

Evaluate our own cultural competency and biases

  1. Identify common biases among culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) gifted students.
  2. Explore the cycle of socialization.
  3. Identify and address personal biases through reflection and proposed action.

Byte 3

Identify gifted characteristics and behaviors within CLD students.

  1. Evaluate the history of gifted identification, including the eugenics movement.
  2. Compare identification measures and tools, specifically exploring the work of Dr. Martin Jenkins and Dr. Mary Frasier.
  3. Identify gifted traits and characteristics among CLD students utilizing Torrance’s creative positives  

Byte 4

Design an academic lesson catered to your gifted students of color 

  1. Explore classroom practices that cultivate the creative and academic abilities of CLD gifted students.
  2. Examine classroom practices that nurture the holistic development of CLD gifted students.
  3. Create a learning activity based on the understanding received in Bytes 1-4.

Byte 5

Evaluate curricular programming for CLD gifted students 

  1. Identify school-  and district-wide curricular programs for CLD gifted students.
  2. Explain how aspects of these programs can be implemented in the daily instructional design.
  3. Recommend practices and frameworks to school based on evaluating their current practices.

Knowledge Blocs (KB) are designed for adult learners to obtain professional development, with learning objectives based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, and actionable outcomes supported by Bloom’s Taxonomy. Knowledge Blocs in general, and where possible, follow the Torrence Incubation Model of Teaching and Learning. 

An account is required to access Knowledge Blocs. Once a Knowledge Bloc has been purchased, access is granted immediately.

Knowledge Blocs contain 5 Bytes, each with a video, contributing information, activity, quiz, and additional community features. Some Knowledge Blocs may include a supplemental Workbook, available through Google Suite at no charge for the end user. A Google Account is required to access this feature.

There is no time limit for Knowledge Blocs. Video Bytes may require viewing where indicated. Quiz Bytes may require a minimum score of 80% – 90% where indicated. All quizzes must receive a passing grade to obtain credit for the entire Bloc. 

All Blocs within the 5 Bytes must be completed to be eligible for a Knowledge Bloc to be marked as completed.

Knowledge Blocs are optimized for current versions of major web browsers. We recommend using a desktop or mobile device running an up-to-date operating system to access all features.
